Shining a Light on Nurses in Harley Street – Meet Andre from Phoenix Hospital Group

To celebrate International Nurses Day, we’re shining a light on the incredible nurses working across Harley Street. Today, we meet Andre, one of the Senior Nurses at Weymouth Street Hospital, part of Phoenix Hospital Group.

What department do you work in, and can you describe your role?
I work on the ward, and my main role is to provide high-quality care before and after surgery. I focus on ensuring patient safety, promoting recovery, and preventing any complications.

What inspired you to become a nurse, and how has your journey in healthcare shaped you?
My greatest inspiration for choosing this career was my father, who is also a nurse. His passion and commitment to helping others deeply influenced me. Since beginning my own journey in healthcare, I’ve gained a greater appreciation for both the challenges and the rewards of nursing. It has shaped me into a much more empathetic person.

In what ways have you seen the role of nurses evolve over the years?
I’ve seen the role of nurses evolve significantly. Nurses are now more involved in decision-making, actively participating in multidisciplinary teams, and taking on more leadership roles. The pandemic, in particular, highlighted the critical role nurses play in public health, education, and crisis management.

What is the most rewarding part of being a nurse, and why?
The most rewarding part of being a nurse is the ongoing opportunity for personal and professional growth. It’s incredibly fulfilling to know that while I’m helping others, I’m also growing and becoming better at what I do.

How can we encourage more young people to consider a career in nursing?
A great way to encourage more people is by sharing personal experiences and highlighting the rewards that come with being a nurse. Being a positive role model—showing professionalism, empathy, and dedication every day—can also have a strong influence on young people.

What role do nurses play in improving patient care and outcomes beyond medical procedures?
Nurses play a crucial role in enhancing patient care by creating a supportive and safe environment. Ensuring patients feel heard, respected, and valued can make a significant difference in their recovery.

What advice would you give to a nurse just starting their career in healthcare?
My advice would be to always ask questions and never stop learning. The beginning can feel overwhelming, but growth will come with time and experience.
