Guy’s and St Thomas’ Specialist Care launches new Dermatology clinic at Wimpole Street

Guy's and St Thomas' Specialist Care is proud to announce the launch of its new St John’s Dermatology service at 79 Wimpole Street as part of its broader clinic expansion project in the Harley Street Health District.

The clinic has been treating skin conditions for over 150 years at St John’s Institute of Dermatology at Guy’s Hospital, and it has now brought that expertise in both surgical and non-surgical treatments to its Wimpole Street clinic.

The expansion project has included the renovation of the clinic’s state-of-the-art Wimpole Street Consulting Rooms and Diagnostic Centre with new procedure and consultation rooms, on-site laboratory and a welcoming outpatient area for patients. The new dermatology clinic is a joint venture with laboratory partner, Synnovis Analytics Tissue Sciences.

Valerie Curran, Head of Adult Private Patients says: “This is a monumental milestone for Guy’s and St Thomas’ Specialist Care and marks our first dedicated private surgical clinic in the Harley Street medical area. I’m delighted to be developing our new skin clinic with St John’s Institute of Dermatology and in partnership with Synnovis.”

As one of the world’s leading centres for skin care and the largest clinical dermatology department in the UK, Guy’s experts treat a range of common skin conditions as well as rare ones that require treatment unavailable elsewhere.

One of the specialist treatments is Mohs micrographic surgery, a specialised type of frozen section surgery used to treat facial skin cancer. Guy’s Hospital is home to the largest Mohs centre in the UK, and it is proud to now bring that expertise to its private facilities at Wimpole Street.

Mohs surgery is seen as the gold standard treatment for basal cell carcinomas (BCC) and squamous cell carcinomas (SCC), the two most common types of non-melanoma skin cancer.

“Mohs surgery offers the highest cure rate and least scarring for treating facial cancers,” explains Dr Rakesh Patalay, consultant dermatologist and dermatology surgeon at Guys and St Thomas Specialist Care. “Our team is highly trained in this technique, with Guy’s Hospital performing the most Mohs procedures of any centre in the country. I look forward to offering the same high-quality care to private patients and bringing expertise from St John’s institute of Dermatology to our new clinic at Wimpole Street.”

With dermatology specialists dedicated to the patient for the entire day and onsite Mohs laboratory for fast results, patients can return home just hours later, confident that the cancer has been completely removed.
