The Harley Street BID hosted a creative and educational children's art activity at this year's Marylebone Summer Festival, celebrating the life and legacy of Fanny Wilkinson, Britain's first professional female landscape designer.
Held in Paddington Street Gardens, one of Wilkinson’s most significant projects, the activity invited children to explore nature, creativity and local history through a series of hands-on art workshops inspired by the gardens she designed in 1886.

Led by artist and educator Poppy, the workshop encouraged young participants to use leaves, flowers and natural textures gathered from the gardens to create their own unique printmaking and plasticine artworks. Through the activity, children learned about Wilkinson’s pioneering achievements and the lasting impact she had on creating accessible green spaces across London.
The free workshop proved popular throughout the day, with families embracing the opportunity to connect with nature, learn about an important historical figure and enjoy creative play in one of Marylebone’s most cherished green spaces.
Nicki Palmer, BID Director at Harley Street BID, said: “We were delighted to celebrate the incredible legacy of Fanny Wilkinson at this year’s Marylebone Summer Festival. As the designer of Paddington Street Gardens, she helped create a green space that continues to benefit the local community almost 140 years later. It was wonderful to see so many children taking part in the activities, learning about her achievements and finding inspiration in the natural environment around them.”
As well as celebrating Fanny Wilkinson’s contribution to London’s landscape, the activity also supported a local cause. Visitors generously donated throughout the day, helping Harley Street BID raise £500 for the Young Westminster Foundation, the festival’s adopted charity.
“We would like to thank everyone who visited our stand and supported the workshop,” added Nicki. “The generosity of festival-goers helped us raise valuable funds for the Young Westminster Foundation, which does fantastic work supporting young people across Westminster.”
The activity formed part of the wider Marylebone Summer Festival, bringing together residents, businesses and visitors for a day of entertainment, community spirit and celebration in the heart of Marylebone.
