Spotlight on Bechstein Hall: A New Cultural Epicentre

Nestled in the heart of Wigmore Street, Bechstein Hall is set to transform the city’s cultural landscape.

This stunning new venue, dedicated to classical music, brings together world-class acoustics, luxurious amenities, and a multi-faceted cultural experience, making it a must-visit for music lovers and connoisseurs alike.

Since its successful press opening in November 2024, Bechstein Hall has quickly become one of London’s most exciting cultural landmarks, seamlessly blending music, fine dining, and relaxation. Positioned within the Harley Street BID footprint, the venue adds a rich cultural dimension to this already dynamic area, offering a sophisticated destination for both locals and visitors.

A New Standard in Cultural Experience
Director Terence Lewis, whose vision has shaped Bechstein Hall, is committed to redefining the concert-going experience. “My goal is to make attending a concert a beautiful, immersive experience,” says Lewis. “The typical 19:30 start time at other venues often doesn’t allow guests to enjoy a relaxed meal before or after a performance. At Bechstein Hall, we offer more flexible scheduling, so guests can enjoy their evening on their own terms, whether dining here or at one of the many nearby restaurants.”

A Multi-Faceted Cultural Destination
Bechstein Hall is more than just a concert venue—it is a complete cultural experience. Here’s a closer look at what makes this venue so special:

  • The Concert Hall: Meticulously restored and dating back to 1892, the venue’s concert hall offers unmatched acoustics and state-of-the-art technology, creating the perfect environment for classical music performances.
  • Fine Dining: Guests can enjoy a fine dining experience before or after the concert at the Hall’s restaurant, where Head Chef Netish Nunnan curates seasonal menus using only the finest locally sourced ingredients.
  • Bar and Lounge Area: The bar and lounge offer a refined space to unwind, with a carefully curated selection of wines and cocktails, providing the ideal setting for relaxation after a performance.
  • Bechstein Piano Store: For both aspiring pianists and professional musicians, the in-house Bechstein piano boutique showcases a stunning collection of handcrafted grand and upright pianos, made by some of the finest piano makers in Germany.

The History Behind Bechstein Hall
The Bechstein legacy in London stretches back to 1889, when Carl Bechstein, the founder of the renowned piano company, chose 40 Wigmore Street for the site of his London operations. In 1901, Bechstein opened a concert hall at No. 36, which was originally called Bechstein Hall. However, during the First World War, the venue was confiscated in 1916 due to anti-German sentiment and sold to Debenham’s. It reopened the following year under the name Wigmore Hall.

The Bechstein name remained absent from Wigmore Street for over a century, but with the restoration of this historic recital venue in the 21st century, the connection to Bechstein has been revived. Today, Bechstein Hall serves as a sister venue to Wigmore Hall, restoring the historic link between this iconic location and the Bechstein brand.

A Historic Grand Opening
The grand opening of Bechstein Hall in November 2024 marked the return of Bechstein’s legacy to Wigmore Street. The evening was celebrated with a gala and press night concert, featuring a special performance by pianist Lucy Parham, with actress Juliet Stevenson. The night ended with a champagne reception at the Hall’s restaurant and bar, allowing guests to toast to the success of London’s newest cultural gem.

As Bechstein Hall opens its doors to the public, it is set to become an essential part of the Harley Street BID’s cultural fabric. Offering a blend of classical music, fine dining, and relaxation, Bechstein Hall provides a unique experience for those who visit. Its location within the Harley Street BID makes it an exciting new addition to this vibrant area, complementing the rich mix of businesses and services already present in the district.
