Plans for a new accessible community garden parklet near Great Portland Street station have taken a step forward, with Harley Street BID submitting a revised design and proposed location to Westminster City Council.
The parklet is proposed for Bolsover Street, outside the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, where it would create a welcoming green space for patients, visitors, local workers, residents and the wider community.
Designed as a calm place to sit, relax and connect with nature, the parklet would include wheelchair-accessible spaces and seating at different heights to accommodate a range of mobility needs.
The garden would also feature climate-resilient, seasonal and pollinator-friendly planting beneath the existing tree canopy, alongside low-level solar lighting and equipment to monitor local climate and air quality.
The proposal draws on the history of the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital and forms part of a wider vision to create healthier and more people-friendly streets around Great Portland Street station, Great Portland Street and Marylebone Road.
Harley Street BID is working with the EU-funded Just Streets project, the University of Westminster and Cross River Partnership to develop the plans. If approved, the Marylebone parklet would be one of only three created across London through the Just Streets project, which aims to make streets more inclusive, sustainable and welcoming.
